Islamabad and Rawalpindi are cooler and greener than Pakistan's southern cities, with a pronounced monsoon and foggy winter mornings. That changes what a solar system has to deal with.
Cooler Weather Helps Panels
Panels work better at lower cell temperatures, so cool, clear days are good for efficiency. Islamabad's summers are hot, but the city does not have the same extreme, sustained heat as the Punjab plains or the south.
Monsoon Rain
Cloud cover during the monsoon lowers output, but frequent rain also keeps panels clean. Systems should have strong anchoring for wind and storms, and proper drainage and waterproofing where cables enter the building.
Winter Fog and Low Sun
Winter days are shorter, the sun sits lower and fog can linger in the morning. Output falls in these months compared with spring and early summer. If winter electricity use is high, for example from heating, plan for it when you size the system.
Shade Is the Big Variable
Trees, boundary walls, water tanks and neighbouring buildings can shade a roof for part of the day, and even small shaded areas can reduce a string of panels' output. A site survey should map the shade across the day and across seasons. In some sectors, nearby hills and mature trees make this especially important.
Tilt and Direction
In Pakistan, panels generally face south. A tilt near the local latitude, about 34 degrees for Islamabad, is a common starting point for year-round output. Sloped roofs may fix the direction, so check it early.
Designing and Maintaining for Islamabad
- Have shade analysed before the system is designed
- Ask for structures anchored for wind and storms
- Keep panels clean; rain helps, but dust and bird droppings need manual cleaning
- Check roof waterproofing around any penetrations
- Use monitoring so you notice a drop in output quickly
