Net Metering in Karachi: K-Electric Process and 2026 Rules

Net metering lets a K-Electric customer with a solar system export surplus power to the grid and receive credit for it. The rules changed in 2026, so older guides, including many still ranking on Google, no longer describe how it works. This is a summary of the current K-Electric framework. Rules and fees can change, so confirm the details with K-Electric before you apply.

What Changed in 2026

  • The old one-to-one unit swap is gone. Units you export are now credited at a lower rate than the retail price you pay for units you import from K-Electric.
  • Agreements are now shorter, typically around five years instead of the older seven.
  • Existing contracts continue until they expire.

In practice, exporting power is now worth much less than using it yourself. That favours a system sized to cover your daytime use, and it makes batteries and daytime load shifting more attractive than before.

System Size Limits

  • Systems from 1 kW up to 1 MW are eligible
  • Your solar capacity cannot exceed your sanctioned load
  • Systems above 25 kW need special review and approval from NEPRA

Equipment Requirements

  • Grid-tied inverters that are PEC-certified
  • Anti-islanding protection, which shuts the inverter down when the grid is off
  • A bi-directional smart meter, installed by K-Electric
  • Surge protection devices (SPDs)

How to Apply: Step by Step

  1. 1Choose an approved, PEC-certified solar installer. The category the installer needs depends on the size of your system.
  2. 2Submit the application through the K-Electric net metering portal. A processing fee applies.
  3. 3K-Electric carries out a technical site survey and reviews your single-line diagram (SLD). This stage typically takes a few weeks.
  4. 4Once the application is approved and the licence fees are cleared, K-Electric installs the bi-directional meter.
  5. 5After the meter is installed and the system is commissioned, you start exporting.

From application to meter installation, the process commonly takes from one to two months, and sometimes longer, depending on K-Electric's workload and whether your documents are complete.

Is Net Metering Still Worth It?

For most homes, the biggest saving comes from using the solar power you generate, not from exporting it. A well-sized system that covers your daytime consumption still cuts your bill substantially. A larger system built mainly to export earns much less than it used to. This is why system design matters more than ever: the right size depends on your usage pattern, not just your roof space.

What to Ask Your Installer

  • Which K-Electric rules apply to my application, and who prepares and submits it?
  • Is the inverter certified and does it have anti-islanding protection?
  • How is the system sized for my daytime usage, given the lower export credit?
  • What happens if K-Electric asks for changes or rejects the application?
  • Do you recommend batteries, and what would they cover?
