Solar Panels in Karachi: How Humidity, Salt Air and Dust Affect Your System

Karachi gets plenty of sunshine, which is good for solar. It is also a coastal, humid, dusty and hot city, which is hard on equipment. A system designed for Karachi conditions will keep performing for years. A system that ignores them can lose output and need early repairs.

Humidity and Salt Air

Salt in coastal air speeds up corrosion on metal parts. Mounting structures, bolts, cable trays and earthing hardware are the usual victims. Ask your installer what the structure is made of and how it is protected, for example hot-dip galvanized steel or anodized aluminium, and whether fasteners are corrosion resistant. This matters most in areas close to the sea.

Dust and Soiling

Dust settles on panels and cuts the sunlight reaching the cells. A thin layer can reduce output noticeably, and Karachi's dry spells and construction dust make this a regular issue. Plan to clean panels on a schedule, with plain water and a soft brush or cloth, ideally early in the morning or late in the day when panels are cool. Avoid harsh chemicals and never clean hot panels with cold water.

Heat

Solar panels lose some efficiency as they get hotter, so a bright but very hot day does not give you as much as the panel's rating suggests. Good design leaves a gap between the panels and the roof so air can flow underneath and cool them.

Wind

Sea breezes and storms put real loads on a roof-mounted array. The structure should be anchored properly to the roof and sized for the wind conditions, not just bolted down quickly.

Where the Inverter Goes

Inverters dislike heat and direct sun. Mount yours in a shaded, ventilated spot, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Poor placement is one of the common causes of early inverter faults.

Maintenance Checklist for Karachi Homes

  • Clean panels regularly, more often during dusty periods
  • Look for rust or loosened bolts on the structure at least twice a year
  • Check that cables and connectors are intact and not sun-damaged
  • Make sure nothing new, such as a water tank or a neighbouring building, now shades the panels
  • Watch your monitoring app for sudden drops in output
