The most common question about solar geysers in Pakistan is whether they still work in winter, when you need hot water most. The honest answer: yes, but not identically to summer. Here is what to expect.
What Changes in Winter
- Days are shorter, so the tubes have fewer hours to collect heat
- The sun is lower in the sky, so less energy reaches the tubes
- Cold ambient air and incoming water start from a lower temperature
- Fog and cloud, especially in northern and Punjab winters, can reduce heating for days
Because of this, a solar geyser heats less water, or heats it less, in December and January than in May. That is true of every solar water heater, not only one brand.
How the Electric Backup Element Helps
Good solar geysers are built for this. MaxGreen's models include an Incoloy 800 electric backup element and a digital controller. When the sun is not enough, the element tops up the water, so you have hot water every morning without relying on gas. In effect, the sun does most of the work on good days and the element only fills the gap.
Why Insulation Matters More in Winter
Heat you collect in the afternoon has to last until the next morning. That is the job of the 60 mm insulation around the tank. Thinner insulation lets the water cool overnight, so you would use the backup element more often.
Tips to Get the Best Winter Performance
- Make sure the tubes have no shade from water tanks, walls or nearby buildings
- Clean dust from the tubes regularly, because a dirty tube collects less heat
- Use hot water in the evening or morning rather than spreading small draws through the day
- Set the controller so the backup element only runs when needed
- In very cold northern areas where frost is common, ask your installer about frost protection
Compared with Gas and Electric Geysers
Gas geysers can lose pressure on cold mornings, and electric geysers use a lot of power the whole winter. A solar geyser with a backup element sits between them: it saves energy on sunny days and still delivers on bad ones. See our full comparison for details.
